News for Lisa Johnson and Unsung Communications, Toronto, Ontario

February, 2008 — Brain tumours, surgery, amnesia, oh my!
Unsung is, sadly, still on indefinite hiatus. Looming debt makes it unfeasible at this time to continue booking tours. It is hoped (and desired) that in the near future Unsung will be back and better than ever, perhaps with some capital and the infrastructure it so deserves to be the company it has the potential to be. In the meantime, we will still be offering publicity for one-off gigs (such as a CD release) and other special events. And, we are still writing bios, web content, press releases, etc. Just no booking or large-scale publicity campaigns at this time. We'll see you soon!

Yes, definitely a hiatus is necessary. Hopefully we'll be back in a few months to continue the indie music fight.

It's looking like Unsung will be going on an indefinite hiatus. Life gets in the way sometimes. Stay tuned....

Lots of tours! New clients! Uh Huh Her bio!

Unsung is happy to be booking more tours for long-standing clients Random Order and Dresden SKy, plus a second tour for the amazing Peter Katz. And then there are the new east-coast clients, whom you must hear: Catherine MacLellan and Pat Deighan.

The bio I wrote for Uh Huh Her — featuring Leisha Hailey (formerly of The Murmurs, currently starring as Alice on The L Word), Camila Grey (Hans Zimmer, Kelly Osbourne, Dr. Dre, Mellowdrone), and Alicia Warrington (Kelly Osbourne, Lillix) — can be read here.

It's been a while since this site was updated. Some loss and emotional issues have taken a toll. Things are getting back on track, though, and I'm working on two prospective Italian tours, as well as an east-coast tour for Shane Philips and a summer tour for Random Order.

I've been tapped to write the bio for new band Uh Huh Her, featuring Leisha Hailey (formerly of The Murmurs, currently starring as Alice on The L Word), Camila Grey (Hans Zimmer, Kelly Osbourne, Dr. Dre, Mellowdrone), and Alicia Warrington (Kelly Osbourne, Lillix). It will be posted here when it's completed.

Okay, you can all stop your griping — I finally got a MySpace page. Check it out: www.myspace.com/unsungcommunications. Special thanks to Jason Chesworth.

The Pocket Co.'s documentary Saturday Night at Morley Gibson's was welcomed into the Calgary International Film Festival. The band was also invited to play a special show after the screening. Congratulations!

Currently working on: Cross-Canada tours for Carrie Catherine and Peter Katz, and east-coast tours for The Pocket Co. and Miss Mitzy Cream's Kitten Revue (a burlesque troupe).

June, 2006
Currently working on: A publicity campaign for Carrie Catherine, west-coast and east-coast tours for Random Order, and another Ontario/Quebec tour for Megan Lane (September-October — come and check her out!).

Looks like the European tour for Birds of Wales is off. Congratulations to the band for signing with The Agency Group.

May, 2006
It seems to be happening — the first European tour, which will be for Birds of Wales. Time is running out and issues abound. Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion to "The European Tour".

March, 2006
It's the one year anniversary of Unsung doing booking! The woe, the heartache, the utter despair.... In other news, spring is springing and bands are touring. I just finished booking Megan Lane's Ontario tour. Short but sweet. She is a phenomenal young blues-rock guitarist/singer-songwriter. You must check her out; she'll blow you away. Soon I'll be booking another west-coast summer tour for Random Order, and I've just forged a new working relationship with the amazing Birds of Wales. Look forward to an Ontario/New England tour in the summer and MAYBE a European tour (my first!).

Lisa Johnson of Unsung Communications is a comic book character! November, 2005
I'm a comic book character! Yep, this is the character inspired by me in The 'Quarters by Gordon Sheridan and illustrated by Paul Elia. The artist rendering is inspired by, but does not look exactly like, me. Obviously — I don't have freckles, I never wear running shoes, and who has a waist that small!?! But it is fun, and the comics are pretty great. Stay tuned here and I'll let you know how and when they'll be available. (By the way, yes that is a Joan Jett t-shirt I'm wearing!)

Lisa Johnson is "Unit Publicist" on a music-documentary film called Saturday Night at Morley Gibson's by Awake Productions. This is a feature-length documentary that follows the Toronto-based band The Pocket Co. over a two-year period, chronicling the agony and ecstasy of recording an old-school rock and roll album, and the meteoric rise to obscurity of the greatest band that never was. No one gets voted off. No one gets fired. And no one gets famous for being pretty and singing other people’s songs.

While doing live music booking for the past little while, I have come into contact with far too many smaller venues in the U.S. that are no longer hosting music or are closing down. Why? Due to high licensing fees demanded by BMI (Broadcast Music Industry — the U.S.-equivalent of SOCAN). Smaller venues in particular are at risk because they do not make a lot of money off of live music to begin with, so it is not financially feasible to continue to have performances. This is important and it greatly effects live music and indie artists. Feel free to direct any comments to BMI executive Matt Fuller: 1-800-925-8451.

Unsung has worked and is currently working with some great indie artists from Canada and the U.S. in the realm of booking, publicity, and bio-writing. These are hard-working indie artists, ranging from folk to funk to blues to ska to electronica, some of whom have been slugging it out for years and some of whom are just beginning the madness. Check them out if you're so inclined (alphabetical order):

Carrie Catherine

Dresden Sky

Emma Wall

evalyn parry

Janine Stoll

Megan Lane

Miss Mitzy Cream's Kitten Revue (burlesque)

Unsung has entered the world of booking. What can we say? It wasn't even listed on this site as a service, but indie artists demanded it and now it is so.

January, 2005
As of February 1st, Unsung Communications will be looking to work with some great artists who could use our expertise. If you like what you see here on the web site, send in your music and press kit to the address on the Contact page.
